&Walsh

Founded 2019Williamsburg, BrooklynIndependent, founder-ownedStrategy, art direction, design, production
Why they're on this list

Led by Jessica Walsh after her split from Sagmeister & Walsh, the studio built a reputation for expressive, concept-driven identities that lean into personality rather than playing it safe. The team works across strategy, motion, packaging, and photography, and its output tends to be more experimental than most branding shops of its size.

How the market is structured

What you are actually choosing between

New York's design market has three distinct tiers that rarely get separated in a list. Knowing which one you are talking to explains most of what will happen next: the price, the process, the pitch, and who ends up doing the work.

TIER 01

Holding-company consultancies

Interbrand sits inside Omnicom, Lippincott inside Oliver Wyman, Work & Co inside Accenture. These firms bring research infrastructure, global office networks, and the ability to staff a rebrand across twenty markets at once. They also bring procurement cycles measured in months, centrally set rate cards, and the largest gap between pitch team and delivery team of any tier. Right for a merger, a spinoff, or a rebrand that has to survive board scrutiny. Expensive and slow for anything smaller.

Research infrastructureGlobal rolloutBoard-grade process

TIER 02

Large independents

COLLINS and Red Antler operate at consultancy scale while remaining founder-controlled. You get senior creative direction that stays involved, less institutional process, and pricing that still assumes a serious budget. This tier is where most of the celebrated work of the last decade came from.

Founder-controlledSenior directionSerious budget

TIER 03

Boutiques & remote studios

&Walsh, Motto, Trollbäck, and Mission Control all run small enough that the person who pitches is the person who works. Faster, cheaper, and more distinctive, with the trade-off that capacity is finite and a large multi-market rollout will strain them.

Pitch = deliveryDistinctiveFinite capacity

The common mistake is briefing across tiers without adjusting. Sending the same RFP to Interbrand and a fifteen-person Brooklyn studio produces two proposals that cannot be compared, because they are quoting fundamentally different engagements.

Why New York specifically

What the city actually gives you

Lineage matters here more than elsewhere

New York's studios descend from each other. Pentagram, Sagmeister & Walsh, and the older corporate identity firms seeded a generation of studios founded by their alumni. &Walsh came out of Sagmeister & Walsh. When you look at a founder's background you are usually looking at a lineage, and that predicts the work more reliably than a services page.

Sector depth is unusually concentrated

Finance, media, fashion, and consumer packaged goods all headquarter here, so studios have accumulated genuine sector fluency rather than generic case studies. A studio that has rebranded three banks understands financial compliance review in a way a generalist elsewhere will not.

Motion and broadcast expertise runs deep

The city's television and advertising history left an unusual concentration of motion-native studios. If your identity has to work on screen, in title sequences, or across broadcast, New York has depth that is genuinely hard to find in other markets.

Rates reflect it

New York studios price above most other US markets and considerably above European and distributed teams. You are paying for concentration of talent, sector experience, and access. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether your project needs those things.

Being local matters less than it used to

Remote and distributed studios now serve New York clients routinely. In-person access earns its premium for workshop-heavy strategy, environmental and spatial work, and stakeholder-heavy rebrands where the room matters. For most product and identity work, it does not.

Common questions

FAQ

What does branding cost in New York?

Boutique studios commonly start in the mid five figures for identity work. Large independents typically begin in the low six figures for strategy and identity together. Holding-company consultancies rarely engage below several hundred thousand for a corporate rebrand. None of these are published rates, and all scale with scope.

How long does a rebrand take?

An identity project with a defined scope usually runs eight to sixteen weeks. A full rebrand including strategy, naming, and rollout more often takes six to twelve months, and the rollout is typically longer than the design work. Multi-market corporate rebrands run past a year.

Independent or holding-company owned?

Independents give you senior involvement throughout, faster decisions, and more distinctive work. Holding-company firms give you research depth, global execution, and process that survives scrutiny. Ownership is stated on every profile so you can weigh it.

Do I need a studio physically in New York?

For workshop-heavy strategy, environmental work, and stakeholder-intensive rebrands, in-person access is worth paying for. For most identity and product work it is not, and several strong studios serving New York clients are fully remote.

What should I have ready before contacting anyone?

A written brief covering the business problem, the audience, what already exists, who internally has to approve, and a budget range. The approval structure matters more than most people expect. Rebrands stall on internal consensus far more often than on creative disagreement.

Why only ten studios?

Because ten profiles written properly are more useful than fifty entries written thinly. New York has hundreds of good studios. This is a shortlist you can actually read.
